Just noticed a new fish at my local shop, an "electric blue jack dempsey".  I was told that it is a new hybrid.  A beautiful fish mostly bright silver, large dark spots, with an overall pearlescent bright blue tint.  Very nice but pricey.  2" specimen for $45.  Does anyone know anything about this fish?  Do they grow the same as regular JD's?  I normally walk by the small fish but this one really caught my eye.  If it could grow to 8" like the normal JD, it would be nice.
Any help would be appreciated.

One of the stores I frequent had one for sale for $40.  I’d never seen one before.  They are quite nice looking.  None of my tanks could handle that kind of attitude currently tho.

I followed discussions about this fish on cichlid-forum.com. These are sometimes hard to find, grow slowly and to a smaller size than reg. JD, overall weaker than wild type JD and not that aggressive.
This fish has lots of fans in the hobby. It is very important to get the specimen from a healthy batch, otherwise be prepared to dissapointment. They are also can be prone to bloat.

Just for the record, a while back i emailed Jeff Rapps...a guy that knows his SA/CA fish and imports hard to find...nice fish, and he told me this was a naturally occuring form.
I agree. I also read someplace that they are not a hybred, but the result of some very selective breeding. I also read that as such, they are not as hardy due to the level of inbreeding required to develop the strain. In time, as the gene pool increases, they may get better.

I mean they are pricey but to my knowledge not that rare. (I can think of 3 LFS in detroit area that regularly have them in stock)

This is a fish that i think would stock fairly well with a parrot, parrots can be sorta tricky because they have aditudes like they should in the SA/CA family but due to their deformed mouths can't really fight back.

Great looking fish, If I was keeping a SA/CA tank at the moment I probably would have one.

if you are going to try to grow him out, change water like crazy and fee pretty heavy on high quality food. it will speed up the grow out process.
