Emerald Corys Problem

I purchased two emerald corys last week and put them in my new 55-gallon tank. Today both of them have a white fuzzy spot on their noses. They are still very active.

I'm assuming that its a fungus, but I'm looking for advice on how to handle this.

I'm assuming someone has seen this before. It this treatable? Can it spread to my other fish?

My gut reaction is to just take them back to Petsmart, since they have a 14-day return policy, but I'm still concerned about the rest of the fish in the tank.

Thanks.

Do you have a smaller tank to house them in that can serve as a quarantine tank for the time being?

I'm not sure what is wrong with your fish, but if it is something serious, and you don't have a quarantine tank, then I would probably take them back to the store right away...unless the symptoms seem to be disappearing.

Having this spread to your other fish in the 55 gallon tank is the last thing you want, and "rescuing" seemingly sick fish from the pet store is in no way productive if it means infecting your healthy tank inhabitants.

It's more likely a bacterial infection than a fungal infection, but many meds will treat both. If you can, put them in a hospital tank and treat them.

If you're still stocking your tank, I highly recommend quarantining all new fish for a couple of weeks. It will save you a lot of money and heartache in the long run. :)
