I will be buying one of these filter in the next little while and was wondering which would be better. The tank is a 90 gallon but the hood is such that I cannot cut it to fit a bigger HOB filter on it. Currently I have an EMP 280 (which does a good job, but is a bit noisy), a Magnum 350, a Sponge Filter, and have a Fluval 304 on the way. I was going to add another HOB filter and was wondering which would be better

i would have said the 280 6 months ago but the truth is is that ac's are a better made filter.the 280 has some nice functions, but they don't make up for the design flaws that the 280 has.aquaclears have their drawbacks but they are minor issues.i personaly don't like how quite the water flow is on an ac(i do like how quiet the motor is though)it doesn't provide enough surface agaitation for me.i also hate the clear casing as it encourages algae growth.but like i said those are minor quibbles.ac's are the real king of hob's.

I've seen several complaints about the clear casing on the AC's. Why don't you just paint the outside of the filter with a non toxic paint. Problem solved. IMO. Just be sure that is is NON toxic.

I would go with the AC and spend the leftover money on better things.
