I was looking at the online manual for the Emperor 280, and I was wondering if it is possible to use an additional media basket instead of pre-made cartridges.  In the drawing, they look to be much the same size and shape.  Has anyone tried/had success with this method?  If so, what is a good combination of media to use?  It seems that I could save a pretty penny over the years by packing my own filter cartridges, without sacrificing filter effectiveness.  Any thoughts would be useful.

Thanks,

As long as it fits in the filter box, you can use whatever media you want<G>.  I have a Penguine 330 at home, and I saved the orginal cartridge, cut off all the "pre filter" blue floss, dumped the old carbon, replaced it, then wrapped the whole thing in a knee-high stocking.  It works pretty well. DYI is sometimes the cheapest way to go<G>

I've owned both the Emperor 280 and 400. I usually fill the baskets with ammocarb... it's the ammo chips mixed with carbon. Umm your question about using 2 baskets in the 280.. yah it works. You can fill it with what ever you like but remember that detritus/fish poop is gonna get stuck in it. I've done it but placed the filters in a sump. After all the prefiltering it was basically doing chemical filtration along with biological. In otherwords, I was using it only for it's bio-wheel(s) and carbon/ammo-chips baskets. Not to filter out dirt/fish poop... I've used peat (lowers PH) or crushed coral (raises PH) in the baskets to adjust PH levels but other than that I'm not sure what you can fit into it. They are kinda small baskets...

I have this blue/white filter media that comes in 100'
22" rolls.... it cost just under $60.   I used it for my
home air conditioningheating filter as well as the filter
in the top of the bio-rocker.
I have also cut some pcs to fit in the emperor 400
basket.... it seems to work.

oh yea... this filter material is about 1" thick
