Hey guys, need a little info on filters and types of filters, as you may know, I currently have a pair of cons in a 10g right now. Im getting ready to buy a 55 or bigger and just wanted to know what type of filtration to look into. (Bored at work and want to do a little researching :) ) Should I do an HOB or canister? UG filter or not? Just weighing my options, going to buy real soon as my cons are nursing about 50 fry right now.

canister filters are more expensive than HOB filters, although they usually provide more filtration. i prefer HOBs myself...theyre simple, easy to clean, and its easy to replace the filter media. my favorite HOBs are tetra-brand whisper power filters. what fish are you planning on putting in the 55 gallon tank?

Thanks, Im going to my cons in there for sure and a bristlenose pleco or two, I plan on adding a few more cichlids, space permitting. Probably just the cons and a bristlenose at first, then after a while I may add some new tennants. Basically just trying to design/price a good 55 or more gallon setup.

everyone will have varying luck with one particular brand or another, but to tell you the truth i have had NO luck with almost anything made by tetra....including both the whisper filters and the tetra-tecs.

i would go with an aquaclear or an emperor HOB filter in a heartbeat before any others.

check the reviews on HOB filters and www.cichlid-forum.com

Thanks for the replies guys, anybody running any of the Seaclear setups, I like the 46g bowfronts, or maybe a bigger rectangle setup. How do you guys like the acryllic tanks? Also, my buddy has a 55g setup from walmart (I know), but hes been running it for about a year and has had no problems, they are pretty good on prices too. If needed I could get a walmart 55g tank and upgrade the filters and heater if needed. I really think I like the seaclears though, as long as acryllic is durable and wont get all scratched up. Also taking suggestions on what other tankmates I could get for my cons once I have my bigger tank setup.

i dont much care for acryllic tanks.

if you stare at them hard enough they scratch.....and buffing out scratches, while possible, would take the better part of a weekend along with the added fun of having to drain your tank.

as far as walmart special tanks go......i dont know if they carry the all-glass or perfecto line.

i would go with the all-glass tanks over the perfecto....just a personal opinion.
