Its been along time since I have been online here but am baffled. I have an established 10 Gallon and 35 Gallon tank. It's been so easy for along time. I don't change the way I do things but got a recall letter on a 50W heater I used in the 10 Gallon. The small tank only housed about 8 neons and 2 danios and an orange sucker fish that had doubled in size about 4" long now. The recalled heater a Marineland Stealth had no problems so I waited 2 or 3 months and took it back and they gave me a Top Fin 50W. They went without the heater for 8-10 hours but the water temp did not drastically drop. I added the new heater that has no temp numbers on the dial and added another thermometer. The gage on the heater had a side temp that stayed in the range of 79 the next number is 82 and it did not go that high. I didn't worry and the next day they seemed fine. But the following day all my fish had died except 2 neons and the sucker. I decided to take down the tank, I was pissed because they were fine before I added that damn new heater.

I took the two remaining neons and added them to my 35 gallon tank. I also added the algae eater. That was two days ago. Today my algae eater is doing flips and hanging around the top of the tank. I put him in a netted area because I can't stand watching him rise and fall to the bottom. I read that sometimes fish get something called swim bladder disease or he might be under stress. My tank is in extreme clean condition so I know its not the water. My 35 gallon has 2 full grown angel fish, 5 ghost fish, 6 neons (2 from the other tank doing well) 2 tetras, the orange sucker and a full grown pleco. The pleco hides out all day under his rock and I did wonder when I added this guy if the pleco who is between 13-14" long would eat the small sucker whose around 4". My pleco does not really eat algae anymore, he got big and lazy he eats the tablets I give him every night. My tank has been around since 2008 and always stocked with about 15-17 fish.

So I guess my question is any ideas why my 10 gallon tank after adding the new heater would have killed the fish in it and why now that this guy is moved to the tank with 20 more gallons of water he is sick or stressed out. Think my pleco when he came out last night had a good chase?

PS my signature below is wrong and I will change it later. I gave away the 10 gallon cold water tank and started a 10 gallon sick tank which I just could not help myself and added fish. Its taken down again since this last episode.

Hello; I have no idea why a heater change would do what you describe. I have changed out heaters many times without incident. Is the new heater a type that hangs on the side of a tank with only a glass tube in the water or the type that is completely submerged?

Did you check the temp with another thermometer? I use my kitchen instant read thermometer to check the temp of water as I put it in and to check the tanks periodically or if anything at all seems "off". I have an older non-submersible in a 10g tank and all it seems I have to do is bump it and it goes wild.

Extended cool periods of time can cause a fish's metabolism to slow down and cause constipation. This can cause the intestine to be enlarged and push on the swim bladder causing this problem. Have you seen the fish making bowel movements? Give him a couple shucked peas, this will help if its the problem. I hope this helps.
