I am mystified as to why the the water in my saltwater tank evaporate faster than my freshwater tank which only 12 inches away.

The only difference between the two is the 3 powerhead in the SW tank, two located at mid depth and 1 at low depth.

Since FW has has lower specific gravity than SW, I expected the reverse to happen.

Can anyone suggest a reason?

The 3 powerheads could have helped in heating the water.

What type of lighting do you have on the salt tank? Lighting is ussally why theres more evaporation in salt I think.

Yes surface water movement and an open top will increase this also a larger surface area (longer wider tank) will allow water to evap quicker.
