Evaporation!

Is there any mathematical equation for evaporation rates in freshwater fish tanks? LOL, I never realized with my smaller 5 and 10 gallon tanks how much water evaporated. My 55 gallon tank with 2 penguin 330s and a fluval 204+ loses about an inch of water a week. (maybe more) If anyone has ever used those penguin /emperor filters they know they can be somewhat noisy when the water level drops. Could the temp in my house have anything to do with it? I do keep my tanks lit for about 10-12 hours a day with two 10,000K coral life 18" bulbs. I know they generate alot of heat but.... the water usually over the bulbs fall back into the water from the glass protecting the lights. Any comments?

well if you havea bubble system going on then there is more chances of water and co2 excaping, but the more current you have in you'r tnak the slower it will evaporate, but then again it mostly depends on heat, sun, energy, humidity, etc...

An inch a week seems like a lot to me. Is any part of the tank open to the air or does your hood cover it completely?

my 90 gallon saltwater loses almost a gallon a day.

My apartment is so humid, that i have never shocked my finger on the light switch!!!!

My tank(72g) loses about an inch a week. By thursday/friday, I can see tons of tiny air bubbles from the filters because of the water dropping into the tank.

Every tank in my house losses a lot every week, I just wait to fill it up until I do my weekly water changes and that way its not an extra chore

Thanks p-lvp, I knew someone would be able to come up with an answer. I looked at the equation and it brought back memories (and nightmares) of college math. Well I'm glad to hear some people have the same general water loss rates like me. As a matter of fact, my home doesnt seem to be as dry anymore. A beautiful tank and a humidifier! What more could I ask for!
