I just placed an order with Petsmart for a Visi-Therm 100W heater. Price was $23.31 for the heater, tax and shipping. That is the best price I found and my lfs was asking $27.99 for a Tronic and still add tax to it. I think I got a better quality heater for a bit less.

Is that heater the best? I do not remember if I saw that heater at PetsMart. There was two, Hydor and Hagen. I chose the Hagen. I think its a Hagen. The box is gone. My memory is terrible on simple things!

GIS, thats good to search for lowest price possible. I was stupid when I got the MiniBow 2.5 aquarium system for my Beta. Why? I bought it on PetCo site for about $25 and I paid an overnight shipping and it totals to about $45. I know, I am stupid. I shouldve got it at WalMart (i work there) with my discount card and get it for about $20. I wasnt thinking...

Yes, I've noticed that alot of people are suggesting Visi-Therm. Now I know the best heater and will get it the next time I buy one.

Edit Update - I just checked that my heater is actually Rena Cal. Is this good?

I was browsing for heaters online, I've noticed that Visi-Therm are very cheap, according to prices. Why? What makes them so cheap? Rena Cal heaters at PetsMart are so much more expensive and its the one I'm currently using and am very happy with it. I am shopping for a heater for the 55gal tank. I'm trying to decide, take the risk for Visi-Therm or go comfortably with Rena Cal.

Oh, another thing, should I get two (divide up the wattage) heaters to ensure both sides have proper warmth, or just get one?

If I am not mistaken, for a 55gal, it will be a total of 300w?

I've been happy with the Rena Cal heaters. I have a 200w, 100w, and 2 150w's (on reserve just in case - I found good deal a while back). I haven't tried any others since the cheapos I started out with died and I went to Rena.

Thunder: 2 smaller heaters are better than 1 IMO. Not just for the heat distribution, as you mentioned, but if one of them decides to die on you, you have a backup... and if one decides to go into melt-down mode, it has less power to bring your tank to a boil.

GIS, did you get Visi-Therm regular heater or the stealth heater? I'm confused by the two heaters. How many heaters does Visi-Therm have?

Regular.
I have been pleased with the performance of this product so far.
It has maintained a very constant temperature of 79 degrees.
Maintained it in A/C, over night and with new CF bulbs.
No complaints thus far.

The Stealth is one step above.
It has a shatter resistant casing.
And _supposedly_ shuts itself off if out of water.
I would not trust that feature.

I'll go with Stealth, just to be safe. I used to have an old heater, it would hang over the back of the tank, I loved it. It was not a problem to do water changes while the heater was on. Now, heaters these days are demanding us to turn it off to do water changes and I do forget. I would deffy go with a heater that turns off automatically.
