Filter and sponges.

I have a question about my power filter. I just purchased a 10 gallon kit. It has a regent power filter that sits on the back of the tank. It's about half the size of my filter for my 20 gallon tank. When I took the filter out of the package and put it together I though that there was something missing. Well it turns out that there isn't anything missing, that's just the way it comes. There isn't a sponge with it. I went to my LPS to see if I could find a sponge that would fit in to the filter but I couldn't find one. I asked the sales person, but she hadn't ever hear of the filter. Do I need a sponge? If so, can I just get a sponge that belongs to a different filter system and cut it to fit into this filter? If I don't need a sponge where will the good bacteria grow?
Thanks in advance for your help.
