I am setting up a 37 Gallon tank for African Cichlids.  I was wondering if I should go with a Aqua Clear 300 or some sort of Canister Filter.  If so what is a good brand canister filter.  What are the pros and cons of each filter type.  I don't really care about the price difference.

I would personally go canister. Cichlids are messy:) But either would be adequate. I would go with the Rena XP2 myself.
Canister
*PROS
More media space, less frequent maintance.
*CONS
Harder to clean

Power
*PROS
Much easier to clean, cheaper
*CONS
Requires more frequent cleaning

I would def go canister. WHich is what you can afford, and what type you may perfer.

For a low budget, the HOT magnums are great. Overstocked tanks, you add a bio-wheel.

My Mag 350's are also very good for me.

If I had the money, I would by a big eheim, but I may try a filstar in the future.

You can also adjust the output better for where you want your current.

Aquaclears are very cheap on the other hand in price.

I would personally buy an eheim canister filter.  I bought a 2215 for my 50 gal and it rocks.  Dont have to clean it for up to 4 months!  Kinda pricey but well worth the extra cash

Canister filters may have a high price tag on them, but it you think about the cost of the filter bags you need for the Aqua clear it's well worth it. Add up how much you pay for filter bags in a year. Maybe $42, and year after year that adds up really quick. With canisters, they only need tending to every 3 to 4 months and the most that needs replacing is the Carbon media inside. I know people who have had canister filters for 10 years. Do the math it's really worth it in the long run. Good Luck. *celebratesmiley*
