Hey guys,

Presently I have this filter on the back of my 10g tank:

Rena SmartFilter 20. This is my second filter. Randomly, the first one somehow developed a problem where I'm not sure if it adjusted it's position accidentally or what, but it stopped flowing water, burnt out the motor, and the motor expanded in size greatly... it's wonderful I got to it quickly otherwise it could potentially have burnt my apartment down.

When I got the aquarium, I really didn't know much about filtration other than I shouldn't have gotten an under gravel filter... Technically, I still really don't know much about filtration. My first concern, is are there any filters out there that are kind of guaranteed that they have safety mechanisms that will prevent explosion or burning of the such?

Secondly, are there any filters out there that I may benefit better from, compared to this filter? What about when I get my 55g?

On bigger tanks I am a fan of canister filters. I have a fluval on my 46g bowfront upstairs and then an eheim on one of my 29's and an eheim on my 55. They cost a bit more up front, but require less maintenance than an HOB filter and have a larger capacity for filtration.
