Can anyone recommend a good filter for a 10 gallon tank? I'm currently using a Top Fin 10, and the water current is a little too strong for my tetras. The water speed cannot be adjusted either.

Any recommendations?

I used the filter that came with my 10 gallon kit that I bought at Walmart. I think it is a whisper, is that right? Anyway, I absolutely love it!! IT is soooo quite and does such a great job. I am not an expert fishkeeper or anything by no means, but to me this little thing is a great little filter at a very reasonable price!

Thanks. I'll look for that one when I go to pick up another filter. I guess I should wait till after my tank has cycled to get a new filter? Something about beneficial bacteria?

Yes, you want to wait a while and let your beneficial bac build up. Some people swear by filter changes others only swish theirs in their old water and then only replace it a couple of times a year. How long has your tank been set up? Mine has been set up since around October I think and I still haven't changed it. Whatever you do don't ever rinse it or anyhting in chlorinated water!!!! Also, if you have a biowheel, don't replace it, EVER! Only the cartridges, and again some people hardly do that.

Wow wow wooow!!! Don't get the aqua tech. No offense to the people that have them, but it is the absolute bottom of the filter barrel. I wouldn't touch one with a 10 foot pole.

The Whisper filters walmart sells are a big step up from the aqua techs, but still leave alot to be desired. If it were me, I'd get an Aqua Clear 20 or maybe a 30. One of the best filters on the market; few people will dispute that.

I guess it just depends on what you need it for. I mean, if you are like a major fishkeeper I guess it would be better to get a major filter. Personally, I just needed a filter to go on my fish tank, nothing serious, so I stuck with the one that came with it. I am redoing my 10 gallon in the future and so I may have to step up the filtration if I choose to go with the certain fish I have in mind, but if you are just going to keep some small little guppies or platys or something in there I wouldn't worry about spending the big bucks. I guess it depends on what you are planning on putting in the tank. Should have asked that before offering up a suggestion.... good catch bigred!

The cost isn't a big issue, AC filters are only slightly more expensive.

Shaunna, there's nothing wrong with running the filter that came with your tank, I just wouldn't buy one new when there are so many other options out there for roughly the same price... Penguin/ emperor, AC, Eheim(If you can find one), etc... lots of choices.

Well if I was getting fish that were considered messy, would the aqua-tech filter be adequate or should I buy better one? Yeah, moonlight, if the better filters are roughly ht esame price, I would go for a better one. I always thought the better filters were more expensive, of course I also only have walmart as a lfs, so my options are pretty limited as far as just going somewhere to glance at what they have. The next time I go to PetsMart though I will look into the better ones.

in my 10 im using a sponge for a 40 gallon, and i think my 10 is my cleanest tank with my convicts. im really impressed with the sponge filters, i had alot of doubts when i first got it because it was so cheap, like 5$ from big al's, but it really has been great, i will definetly buy another sponge filter in the future.

Go for tha aquaclears they have excellent filter power and they are very quiet, also they all have a flow control so you can have more or less flow depending on your tanks needs, plus they last forever, i have had minerepaced only once in 6 years and that was only because i accidentally let it run dry. And there is a large selection of media for it not just the little slid in carbon/sponge type inserts, so you can add the media you want to keep your tank looking its best. Go aquaclear all the way. they dont reall cost that much either i paid 20$ for the one in my 50 gallon.
