Filter Funk?

I was wondering if anyone knows what this stuff is that I seem to have growing on my fliter. I have a Penguin 170 and where the water exits, there is some white "funk" building up. It looks like some type of bacteria or fungus. I really do not want to clean it off as I know that a good bacteria build-up is crucial. I am kind of new to this, so please help! Whats the funk and should I remove it?

You can clean it off, it probably is fungus from rotting food that got caught on it. Definately clean it off as it may clog water flow. The good bacteria will develop on your biowheels.
