Filter prob.

I know I'm probably posting this in the wrong place, I just dont know where else would be better (if a mod does, feel free to move it )
Okay so I'm sitting here a few mins ago typing about bettas when suddenly my filter stops working! Just randomly stopped, not a power surge or anything because everything else is still going. It came back on a few mins later and all this - stuff is floating around my tank, it looks so poluted and the fish look scared, it doesnt seem to be going away, i put the net in to get bits out, but it wasnt that effective. I'm gonna buy new (the blue parts) today, is there anything else I should do?

type of filter is it? sounds just like the impeller got jammed and debris came out on the restart, it should filter out with some time. I dont think it will cause any serious problems. Maybe a water change will help get some more clarity

don't spend that money untill your sure what happened.often times replacement parts cost so much it hardly justifys the cost and you might as well get a new filter.e.g. i bought my emperor 400 for 45 dollars and the cost of a new impeller is 20 dollars,for that cost just get a new filter.but odds are there is nothing wrong with it.probably just a stray peice of gravel or carbon got stuck and dislodged itself.

Its an emperor 400 (yeah I know its large for a 29 gal.) and I think you guys were right, it seems to have cleared up. Thanks =)

How does the Penguin or the Emperor perform. If you read my recent replies and threads I recently got a 26 gallon tank. Which one would be better? The Penguin 170 or the Emperor 280? I have a Whisper Economy and it won't work on a 26 gallon. Any advice would help. I won't think about Tetratec or another Whisper.

emperor 280 is definately better then a penguin 170, emperors are much better then the penguins IMO

I do agree but does anyone know where it could be sold for a cheap price. I freak out when i see the filter's price in various location.

I have to agree with soulfish, I have a emperor in my 29 gal. and a penguin in my 10 gal. and I like the emperor the most. Unfortunately I have no idea where to get them for less $$. Good luck =)

32.99 isn't too bad for the Emperor but I use this site called www.petsolutions.com and they once had it for 29.99. But didn't need it then Bummer. You guys should check it out.

What happens when you use a 10 gal only filter in a 20 gal tank?

not enough filtration happens...you will find that the water will not stay very clear if you have a fully stocked tank...basically, not enough water flowing through the filter per hour to keep it clean

I use Emperor 400's on my 45 & 55 gal tanks and I love them both. They are quiet and reliable.

but the filter needs to be able to keep up with the fish...they produce waste constantly just like it filters constantly

i know this will be an unpopular opinion here but i say ditch those emperors,too many moving parts.mine rattled itself apart,while my penguin has been running for much longer and still pushes water efficently.plus all the little options are kinda pointless on the emperors anyways,if you use them like most of the people on this forum.
