Filter question: Alternative for Bio-Wheel.

Hi. I am planning on getting a 30 Gallon tank and I am still doing some investigation. I see that the Bio-Wheel is excellent. The problem is that in the country where I live (in Central America) they don't bring the Bio-Wheel. And ordering it online is no problem. The problem is at Costums, where you end up paying the double of what the article is worth. The point is I can't get the Bio-Wheel. What would be the best alternative? I hear Aquaclear 200 is very good. It is rated well on this website.

The thing about bio-wheel filters is they hold a lot of bacteria, and you should never have to touch the wheel holding the bacteria during a water change. It also gives the bacteria a lot of O2 as it is exposed to air(and out of the water)

I am not sute how many spaces the aquaclear 200 has, but first you get a second sponge and stick it where the carbon would be.

So now you have 2 sponges filtering instead of one and a carbon.

This way, if the first get clogged and needs to be cleaned real good, you can leave the second sponge which still holds bacteria. You then would place the second sponge where the other was. You would alternate cleanings, and where their postion would be.

If there is room though, I would add some bio-media of any sort after the two filters(bio-max for example). They can be placed in a nylon bag,and you should have the added extra place for bacteria you may need. It also helps not to overstock your tank.

Your right fender, the bio-wheel would not help matters in containing Co2.
But if you ask me, any HOB or similar filter is just as bad. The water is hitting the surface on the return , dispersing Co2, also agitating the aquarium water below releasing more.

Carbon dioxide disolves easier into water than O2, but on the same note, diffuses out much faster than O2 does( like 10,000 times more)
