I have a 55-gal with a Fluval 204 Cannister filter at work that I inherited. I know that this filter is not strong enough for a 55-gal, but I've been making due with it up until now. It has basically slowed down pumping water back into the tank so much that it's practically useless at this point. My question is this: Eventually (in the next year or so) I'm going to be getting a 150-gal. tank for in my home, at which point I'm going to transfer the fish from work, and shut this tank down. Should I get a filter capable of handling 150-gall and just use it on the 55-gall in the meantime until I'm ready to make the switch? Can you use a filter that powerful on a 55-gall? I don't know much about this....Would also appreciate some recommendations on what filter to purchase...is the Fluval the best?

Thanks!

I'd get a better filter for the 55 like a fluval 305 or a good aquaclear. And then when you set up a 100+ run multiple filters including the new one you plan to buy and another really good one and maybe even the old 204

If the 204 is running slow just clean it out including the impeller and it should help.

i know that you need a new filter, but if the current one has "slowed down" whens the last time you broke it down and cleaned it, I.E. cleaning impeller. do this in old tank water that you siphon out after a water change. That might help out a little bit with slowing down.
