filter too strong?

I bought a Tetra filter 5-10 g filter.

I've noticed my fish and frog getting caught in the current and being pulled back to the filter. I'm sure the filter is too strong, but there's no way to lower the power level on it. I'm wondering if this was the right filter to get?

It said 5-10g tank.

I assume that by saying "pulled back to the filter" you mean to the pick up tube? I'm not sure, but I doubt the filter could provide that much suction. They may get caught a little in the current, but I wouldn't worry too much.

I use Marineland Penguin 100's on my 10g tanks (Approx. twice as much filter as is needed), so far no real problems, and excellent filtration.

Christinap,

see if you can find the GPH rate on the box of the filter. If you don't see it, does your filter look something like this?

Whisper® PF-10

EDIT: If fish are getting pulled in by the suction of the tube, then I would say the filter is too powerful. Is there some kind of adjustable knob? One last thing. Be careful, with a filter as strong as you describe, fry will vanish if you don't do anything about it. Try putting a small pantyhose around the tube. See if this helps.

This is the one I have

The bottom is where the suction is and the top is where the clean water comes out. When the fish swim by the filter, they get pulled backwards, so most of them are staying at the heater. There's no knob to change strength. The one I bought says fora a 5-10 gallon, I have a 10 gallon, so the filter is supposed to be correct

I'm currently using a Tetra Whisper 5-15 filter on my 10 gallon fry tank, and the flow/suction isn't nearly as forceful as what you describe. Also, the slits in the end of the intake tube are quite narrow, and only the very smallest/weakest of fry would have any chance at being sucked in there. Fry are a lot stronger than we give them credit for, in most cases.

I don't know what else to say---perhaps you're using a slightly different model than the one I've got. Then again, I wouldn't think that would account for such a discrepancy.

I have one of these on a 5 gallon. I agree, the thing is way too strong. I would never recommend one of these to anyone. Not only do they take up way too much room in the tank, they also don't filter very well. I would return this if I were you and if it's possible, I hate mine and the fish I have in there still aren't used to it after months of having to deal with it.

I thought I had a strong filter when I first started this hobby. I would come home and sure enough some fish would be stuck to the pickup tube. that doesn't happen anymore and I'm guessing they sold me sick fish. It had nothing to do with the water parameters either so I turned down my filter but now I have it on high.
