external canisters, and aquaclear hob filters.the emperor and penguin biowheel line is nice but needs some re-engineering to be a truly great hob filter.honestly it doesn't matter what we like it's what you like.i like canisters, some people just don't like the trouble involved with one.some people don't like ugf's because of the deposits that collect underneath the plates,i don't like them for asthetic reasons(it look's bad in my tanks)

I think all of those types of filters have their reasons for existance. There are some people who still swear by UGF's, some people who wouldn't ever go back to a HOB after having a Canister, some people who wouldn't ever get anything besides a whisper :)

Personally I'm happy with the normal HOB whether its a proaquatics, whisper, AC whatever...and I think when/if I get larger tanks I'll look at canister filters or another option.

I think they all "work" well...as long as they're applied in a tank that fits their ideal environment and are properly maintained. If they didn't work well I dont think they'd be on the market.
