I have a rugf setup in my 90G but Im having troubles finding a inexpensive PH for it. I would like to get it working sometime. It sounds like a great idea however Im still a little weary about having a even flow of water through the gravel bed. I think that the flow will be more substantial at the lift tubes than in the middle where you want it.

Reverse is the "new" way. You are simply trying to avoid the build ups of the gunk that collects under the UGF. It prefilters the debris, and pushes the water upward , through your substrate pushing the gunk out of the filter bed.

The other way.standard..you will over time get a collection of gunk under the UGF.(put some worms or something down there and avoid it).

My UGF worked very well when I had it going.

To concentrate on where you need/want the ugf to really suck/push water through, you simply layer your gravel thinner in the spots you want more flow, thicker in the areas you want it reduced.
