Fin rot, ick and now split tail.

About 2 weeks ago one of my fan tailed gold fish had a bit of fin rot. I got Melafix and used it as directed. I have changed about 20% of the water twice since the Melafix. The gold fish was doing great. Then last Thursday I notice that they weren't as active as they usually are so I checked all my levels and everything was ok. I changed 20% of the water on Friday morning, by friday afternoon I noticed that the one that had fin rot now has ick. So, I went to my LPS and got some ick cure and have been putting that in the water for the past 3 days. The ick is clearing up but now the gold fish has split tail. My question is, should I wait until the ick is cleared before I use the Melafix again or can I use it in combination with the ick cure?
Thanks for any help.
Kim.

I would only use medications one at a time. Use the ick medication for as long as it is directed for use, do a 30% water change, and then use the melafix.

Actually, melafix may not be the strongest or best stuff. I usually use Maracide or Maroxy depending upon what might be the trouble. Use it for a full two weeks, most diseases are still in your fish tank, even if it has cleared up on the fish. Your fish may look happy in two days of treatment, but the disease could reoccure just as quickly because you haven't rid it completely from your tank.

Water quality is also very important with goldfish, the slightest of ammonia build up, and my poor fishies are not happy campers, and when you have as many goldfish as I do, you waterchange...a lot! I use bio-wheel filters on my tank, and water change at least once a week if not twice.

Aquari-sol is also a good goldfish med, and I use it during a water change as a preventative.

The best filter on a goldfish tank is one with lots of biological

Most ich medications will work on fungus as well. It is the bacterial infections that are tough to medicate. If a bacteria is gram+, then a gram- antibacterial med will not cure it, and vice versa. That's why I just use Maracide/Maroxy, it seems to work on both gram+ and gram- bacterias.

Fungus can also be cured with a salt remedy.  Usually if the fungus seems bad, I'll use a handful of aquarium salt every day for seven days, then do a 50% water change, and continue that until the fungus goes away. I've not had problems with the goldfish and adding salts. You could also use a salt dip as well.

I love my goldfish. They eat from my fingers, and my blue oranda likes to be petted. If I leave my hand in the tank, he'll swim by my fingers and let me stroke him. They've got such personallities!
