You could get away with it, but I would go with a 29 gal instead. Remember, this fish might get about 5 to 6 inches.

As for your question, yes its possible.

The problem you have going on here is trying to keep a non-dwarf in, for a non-dwarf cichlid, a dwarf sized tank. I like to give my fish room because I'll always end up adding some type of bottom feeder(s). Have you thought about a jewel cichlid? Are you talking about a 20 high or long? I wouldn't put any in a 20 high, but a single jewel, firemouth or convict might work. I like the jewel best of the three for a 20 because it is a more slender fish.

So you don't want any kind of dwarf cichlid? Jewels are considered West African "dwarfs" I was going to suggest Kribs or some kind of Pelvicachromis species.

I would try it - it will be a lot less hassle than a jewel even though it's a bit bigger
