When my 38 gallon tank is through cycling, how many fish can I add at one time without stressing them or the three gourami's that are helping it cycle. I'm reading conflicting info on how many fish to add and what length of time to wait before adding the third group. Would love to hear the groups opinions. Thanks.

I'm not sure how many fish you can add at a time. On my tanks I added 2 fish every day until it was stocked how I wanted it, And they were fine(no deaths). I think your tank would look good with different tetras in it like say 5 neons tetras, 5 glowlight tetras, 5 serpae tetras, 5 pristella tetras, you know something like that. Thats what I want to do when I get a bigger tank. Hey welcome to fishtank.net.

Hey JD - That mix sounds really good, but is that enough of each variety to keep everyone happy. I guess I thought I would have to have 8-10 of each schooling variety. I'd like to have as great a variety as possible. I'll try adding a couple of fish a day after cycling is complete and just keep a close eye on things. Thanks.

it really depends on the fish that your adding.

there's a big difference between 5 pristella tetra and 5 full small gourami or 5 full gourami.

i'd say to plan out what fish you want to end up with and then add each school 1 by 1, maybe 1 school a week.

that give the fish and the tank time to acclimate, but not enough time that a more aggressive fish would really firmly establish a territory.

personally i like to do a fishless cycle and add all the fish at once.
I just added 17 fish to my 75 gallon over the weekend and everyone is pretty happy.
