Hi once again!
I was wondering what do I need to build a full Fish Medical cabinet. The necessary medicine I need etc etc. Name me some necessary products i should buy, preferably with no dyes...because it makes the decors, the tank edges ugly with the residue it leaves.. so give us your input about what necessary meds we need to keep sick fish healthy again..thanks.

Salt.

Yep, that's right, salt, Kosher, pickling, aquarium, non-iodised table.

Please elaborate more about the healing power of salt, what kind of salt? how much salt to put? what diseases can salt cure? please elaborate more, it would be a great help for a beginner like me and other newbies..thanks.

You can get lots of info about healing properties of salt from various fish and aquarium guide books.

Basically what salt does is change the osmotic pressure of the cells.  It is why we gargle with salt water when we have a sore throat. The bacteria that live in the throat thrive in a relative freshwater environment, your mucosal membranes. Strep and other harmful bacteria crenuate, get all the water sucked out of them, by the saltier content of the water you gargle with, and this destroys the integraty of the cell.

The same principle applies to freshwater fish diseases as well (the reverse is true for saltwater diseases, in which freshwater causes the cell to lyse or explode with water overload), but salt must be used with caution. While low levels of salt can get rid of disease, an overuse of salt can cause your fish stress as well. Most aquarist will say to keep a theraputic level of salt in an aquarium at all times, some will say not to do this because it stresses your fish and is not their proper habitat.

You would have to read a bit more aquarium books, and I believe some other people on this site might know some links, to reason out how salt will help in your situation. Each system is different and there is not one general "rule of thumb" about salt use to make it easy for you.

I thought I read some where that the old "the iodine in table salt is bad for your fish" line is a myth.  I have used the table salt with iodine a few times and never observed any problems with it.

Anyone else??

Also, I have read that Quick Cure is a good general remedy as well, I have seen it at Walmart and Petco, but never used it yet.
