Fish stocking (Number of fish)

Whats the most fish i can put in my tank at once without destroying my cycle? i've heard 2 - 3 at once should be max. Im looking for a second opinion, would it be okay to take 1 ( big one) out and put 4 in?

I think it depends on whether you're talking about adding fish to your tank once you finish cycling, or adding fish in to cycle the tank with. I suppose either way swapping out 4 small ones for a big one would work, but if you're using them to cycle, you should make sure they are hearty or you may lose them, as cycling with fish in the tank is stressful for them.
