My tank is almost through cycling i feel (see my other thread: 'Help interpreting test results'), and hopefully by Saturday i should be able to add further fish (there are currently some small platies in there). I have a 20 gallon tank with live plants. pH is really high right now, at 8.6, but i might try to get this down to 7.5.

What fish should i add now? I've made the following shortlist and would appreciate any advice about the suitability of these fish in a community tank...

>Bronze Corydoras
>Black Widow (i've heard they can harm other fish?)
>Opaline Gourami
>Glass Catfish
>Angelfish (am i being too ambitious here?)
>Neon Tetras (i've read these are not as easy to keep as some people think?)

Or if there is anything else that you can suggest?

Well, those do sound good but.................this is what i think IMO would look nice and live together :)

The small platies
6 Neons
3-4 cory cats
4-5 black tetras

No glass cats bc glass cats have to be in a group of like 6 or more and get rather large. No angels unless you have a bigger tank for them once they can eat the neons and....... the platies i would think would pick at the long flowing fins.
and ....
Maybe if you have any room and
if the platies don't like  the long
fins of
a pair of oplaine gouramis ;D

That would look nice 8)

Thanks Daniel. I hadn't considered Black Tetras but i've now just read up about them and they look interesting. Would i have to lower the pH for any of the fish you've suggested? Also, are the Opaline Gouramis out of the question?

Thanks

yes, you would have to lower the ph for those fish. neons, corys, and black tetras are all from the amazon, and if you are going to do an amazon biotope, you should have your ph as close to neutral (7) and maybe even lower (~6.5). as for the angelfish idea, i wouldn't keep any angelfish and neons together. angelfish in the wild eat neons and they sure will eat them in an aquarium. hope i could help. :)

easiest way is to buy a tap water purifier and mix when doing water changes. tap water purifiers will take your tap and give it all the same qualities as RO water, just the tap water purifier is much cheaper. :)

Ummmmmm................ there are other ways that might do the same job

#1 The same way joe suggested...... which is the easiest way ;D I think ???

#2 Get some driftwood that would help it a little bit and it would give it that"black water" look 8)

#3 Use chemicals ;D This might seem like the easiest way but , some chemicals sre hazaedest to the fish by lettin out NitAtrates. This is a liast resort 8)

No, the Oplaine might go................it all depends on the mind of your platies ;D But, i think it would work.I would go ahead and find out 8)
