My betta is not getting any better. After 3 rounds of Maracyn II, she still has her parasites. I have read online about people taking sterilized needles and piercing the parasite-filled bump. She is breathing heavily and lethargic because the bump is right up against her gills. I think if I could heat up a needle, remove Finn from the water, and pierce the tiny white spot (a hole that a worm made) on her side, she might get better. This seems really risky. Some people online sedated their fish with clove oil. I don't want to do this because I'm afraid I'll accidentally give her too much.

I agree with not trying to sedate the fish. At this point I don't really see that you can lose too much by lancing the lump, particularly if it is fluid filled. If it is already an infection, I doubt sterilization is much of a problem. The problem would be the viscosity of that needs to come out of the hole and not going too deep. Good Luck!

I've used clove oil before to sedate fish to file the teeth (saltwater puffers not the freshwater fish) when I bought them with overgrown teeth. If you go that route, look at instructions on how to sedate them, how long they can be under, and how to wake them up.

I never lost a fish using those methods, but I'm not sure how it translates to freshwater. They also recommend ODing marine fish with clove oil to euthanize, so its not that its NOT deadly to them too if not done right.

Any chance one of those really sharp pointed Exacto knifes would work better? Practice on something else first - maybe an orange? That is what we used for giving shots.

I didn't sedate her, and it was very tricky to do, but I pierced the lump. She is bleeding a little bit because I didn't pierce exactly the spot I wanted to. Should I add any wound medicine to the water? There is salt in there along with Maracyn II.

Using an exacto knife has the chance of slashing the fish if it moves at the wrong time.

At least with something the size of a molly cloves work incredibly fast. There are dosing instructions out there online. This would probably be the easiest way to lance your baby.

The salt will only aggrevate the wound. I would change out a large portion of the water to get that salt out of there (imagine having salt poured into your bleeding wound...yeah, not fun) and then keep her water pristine, add API Stress Coat and give her food soaked in garlic juice (from minced garlic...not in olive oil, just straight up garlic juice). The garlic juice will boost her immune system and the Stress Coat will help soothe the wound. I did this when my Amun cut himself on his castle ornament and within a few days, the wound was completely gone.
