Hello,

I currently have an Aqua Tech 5 fish tank (Regent / Aqua tech) and it has a Bio Wheel filter system.

The replacement filter cartridges are expensive $6.89 for a package of 3.

They are EZ-Change # 6 cartridges.

Can someone tell me were I can get a cross reference chart so I can find a compatible filter cartridge for less.

My filter cartridge is a carbon / pad type and is 5 & 3/4" (L) x 3" (W)

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks. *GOLDFISH*

So, just to be clear... and correct me if I'm wrong; you're spending under three dollars a month on replacement cartridges, assuming your filter uses one cartridge at a time. To be sure, even if you have a fancy filter that uses three cartridges at a time, you're still spending less than ten bucks a month on it.

How much less are you planning on spending? I can only guess you're talking in terms of Canadian or American currency, so this seems a little like splitting hairs. At that price, I'd just stick with the cartridges designed specifically for your filter.

The cheapest route is to make your own.

Not familiar with what your filter looks like so maybe this won't work, but for others like Penguin biowheel filter cartridges, this works fine:

Keep the frame from your filter cartridge, and just put new fiber fabric on it. Attach with rubber bands. Use 100% polyester fiber matting. Usually walMart carries it, or a craft/hobby/fabric store. Walmart is usually cheapest, and since the purpose of DIY is to make it cheaper, try there first.

I only actually change the filter when it's falling apart.

I don't run carbon all the time, so what I do is this: I run the carbon-filled filter pad for two weeks, then slit it open at the top, shake out all the carbon, give it a good swish in dechlorinated water, and pop it back in. When it gets gunked up, I swish it in dechlor'd water and pop it right back in. Whenever I feel the need to run some carbon, I put it in a mesh drawstring bag and drop it in the filter box.

Filter cartridges last practically forever like this. Aside from the carbon, which I feel is for occasional use anyway, they're for mechanical filtration and bacterial colonization, so why change them out all the time. I don't feel I'm being cheap, just practical.

Looks like these are made by Marineland. Might be the same as the Marineland Eclipse System Six Cartridge Rite Size K.
