Fluval 403 & a seperate pump?

I was given a 403 that doesn't work. I'm getting some parts, but if that doesn't fix it, I was thinking of hooking a pump on the outflow side of the canister to the tank to pump water through it that way. I can't think of any reason why not to try this, anyone else have any comments?

I hadn't thought of this but I don't see any reason that it would not work. Like a powerhead in the tank . . .

I'd like to know how things turn out on this.
