As for Fluval Vs. Marineland. The Fluval has 3 stages of filtration, while plane Magnum 350 only has 2 (mech/chem). Have to get Pro system to get bio filter section to complete system. Marineland products are usually better bang for buck though. But not to say the Fluval sucks, its still a good unit.

I use the fluval and like it alot.  Never used the marine land but just checking it out at the lfs it doesn't appear to have baskets (at least as many) for different filtration media like the fluval or ehiems.

just my $.02

A while ago I posted a similar question (see Equipment) regarding filters for a 55 gallon.  When canisters were mentioned, the Filstar xp2 appeared to get high praise...
Good filter, easy to maintain, and low price.
I have not purchased a filter yet - still refinishing the stand and canopy.

I have two magnum 350's and a Hot magnum. SImple and easy to maintain.

Mechanical and biological is what I use them for..no chemical is needed. You need to find some bio-max or bio-chem stars or similar media, and stick it in the carbon container(don't use the carbon except for taking out meds) That will be all you need unless you are very overstocked, or have lots of poopers for fish, then a bio-wheel may be needed(or a second filter)

I would say Fluvals are better then Mag's the 404 has 4 chambers. and there is nothing wrong with the container and impellers, must have had some guy talking what he didnt know.

The only thing I don't like about the fluval is priming it, other then that, I personally think they hold a larger Bio load then a mag and you can add more things to a fluval. Not to mention they are very quiet!

Like "aspguru" said, I like Bio-Wheel also, but that doesn't stop me from using a Fluval. I have a Bio-wheel 30 attached to the outlet of my Eheim 2028. I split the output line to get current flow into 2 areas. The same applies to Fluval. So if thats an issue, just get a Bio-wheel 30 or 60. It would depend on how much your filter flows though for each one. *thumbsupsmiley*
