When I change the carbon and ammonia chips, is it ok to pour out the dirty water but not clean the sponge?

yep. I change the water every 2-3 weeks depending on the amount of plant waste floating about and I only change the sponge filter piece every once in a while. And don't change all the sponges at once. Want to leave some good bacteria in the filter. I change two out of four when I do change them. What size is your tank or tanks? That is alot of fish.
