use polyfill, its probably the cheapest and easiest to change

granted these sponges are great breeding grounds for good bacteria and shouldn't really be changed....but, do what ya gotta do!

Watch out - i put a bio-degradable sponge pad in once - BIG mess. Not all sponge is suitable, or clean (chemicaly). Big blocks of sponge should be available at your LFS - then you know it's safe.

I simply rinse-out my fluval sponge - but it is of the coarse variety (bigger holes), blue in color. I don't think I will ever need to replace it.

However, I have a 2nd filter for finer particles (powerhead quickfilter actually), that takes care of the floaties better.

If you do get a sponge, make sure it is course enough not to restrict water flow to badly.
