Yes, all mbuna need lots of veggie matter in their diet. However yellow labs are much more tolorant of a higher protien diet than most other mbuna. A good quality balanced food would do them just fine.

I've ordered New Life Spectrum pellets from Big Als before for my yellow labs and other mbuna. I feed my labs that, and various quality low-protein flakes (not found on Big Als). I've heard good things about O.S.I. cichlid flakes, I think I'm going to try those the next time.

By the way 'lab' in this instance is short for 'labidochromis' (the genus yellow labs belong to).

I supplement my yellow labs with frozen "Emerald Entree" San Francisco Bay Brand cubes. They love it. And once every two weeks I give them half a cube of the "Frozen Bloodworms".
They like those but I know it isn't great for their digestive tract so I only give them bloodworms when they behave! LOL (aka when they aren't getting all the girls pregnant!)
