I found a cheap new tank that doesnt seem to leak. Its a 35 gallon or 30 gal hex. nNot sure. Came with a stand, light powerhead, undergravel filter w/o tubes but i wont be using it. A little scrubber and some fake plants. For $30 gotta love those yard sales.

Anyway i wanna do this right with no problems. I have a 5.5 gallon and 55 gallon already cycled so i can always take that gravel im just not sure i want to. It might not work so let me run some options by u guys if you like.

1. Can i put some of that gravel in like a pot or strainer put it in the tank, introduce ammonia for a little while and hope the bacteria will move from one gravel to another. Then i just remove that and im set.

2. I have ehfisubstrat in my eheim. (bio material) can i dump some of that into my filter, h.o.b. kind aquaclear 300 i think, and let the bacteria chill in there for a while and then occupy the gravel or sand on bottom, and also some pads or somethin in the filter. The person who sold me the tank also provided me with some sort of a carbon pak.

3. I suppose i can also cycle the old fashioned way but im low on patience alot of the time.

4. A w/fish cycle is out of the wuestion simply cuz i know now how the fish suffer and maybe i can do it right.

Also i wanna maybe get a normal gravel. One with not so many blues and stuff in them. MAybe a sand. I figure since a hex tank is kinda tall and my tube dont go into the tank that far sand wont kill the impeller. Im lookin for a more natural look. Id like live plaants and maybe dump a layer of laterite or fluorite but im thinkin rocks will do and maybe a floatin plant of some sort. The light isnt altogether strong and maybe i wont bother. On my 55 im wishing i had but im still debating that.

Ill probly use one of my old heaaters not invest in a brand new one. Old ones still do the trick. What size do u think? 100 or 150 watt. Im runnin a 200 on my 55 gallon now.

My filter is gonna be bootlegged becaues i think itll work. I have some great material like cotton but not like cotton that you stick in there for mechanical filtrationand i can mix it with some carbon and even ehfisubstrat. I like that ehfisubstrat i dea i have extra. Im just gonna stick that all into one hole in the filter becaus ethats all there is.

Finally on to fish. I know my 55 might be a little overcrowded but i dont think i wanna remove many fish. They are in a groove thing sorta. I could take out a gourami but thats limiting my fish options. I want to keep a new thing but i dont know what. Live bearers could work but then id have to many babies maybe. Gouramies might be to aggressive for something else. I have a convict in a 5.5 gallon that could also go in there. of course not with the others. But there goes the whole breeding party. So what do i do. CAEs or another algae eater could do well in a semi aggressive bit. I also might wanna try keepin some corys alive. I wanna try a different thing like colorful semi aggressives. I remember somethin on like juliodochromis. Something like those i guess. Colorful babies. WOuld they be ok for a hex. SO MANY IDEAS wwhy*laughingc :D

Thanks for some pointers

definately no overcrowding in this one.

Well as for cycling your tank, yes you can put gravel in the HOB filter or any media with bacteria on it. Whatever you decide that is called seeding and will help get your tank cycled faster. Im not sure how long it will take to cycle but im sure seeding will knock off a few days of the cycle. As for the fish is up to you. If you want to keep livebears dont worry so much about the population. Some may live and some get eaten but if they get out of hand give them to the petstore no harm in that. Awesome deal you gotta love those rummage sales.

Definately gotta love those sales, my parents were reading the paper and their was like a 75 gallon with a decent filter for about $100, to bad i couldnt get it though. Depth C what kind of sand do u have thats settling in your 10 gal. Im thinkin about sand in there but still arent sure about it.

Im also down with knockin days off of cycling the tank, anything that might knock off some time is welcome.

I got some play sand from Home Depot for $2.50. But i dont like it now that it has settled. So me being picky im going to be switching to the same gravel as my planted 10 gallon just the grain size is smaller so im gunna love it over the sand which im not too fond of.

Ok well after thinkin for awhile and starin at the tank and some poor little bettas at walmart i think ive decided at least some of the fish i will put in the tank. They include 1 male betta, maybe 5 white cloud mountain minnows, and 3 or 4 corys. Maybe 5. Planted with some fake rocks and maybe even a sandy bottom.

Im wondering though how to keep corys alive as far as food. I tried shrimp pellets but theyd never eat. Also what would be the ideal temp for these guys. Im thinkin 74 but not sure. Any other ideas as far as fish that are kinda calm and wont kill my betta or minnows. If not i think ill leave it at that.

Thanks
