September 12 I've got to go to Michigan for my great-grandmother's 100th birthday, and I don't have anyone who can come over to feed my fish. I'm planning on putting one of those 14-day fish food things in the tank, but I'm afraid pleco might decide to take it upon himself to eat it all in a day or two...

Don't use those feeder blocks... They do bad things to water conditions in small aquariums.

Here's a better thought for you, the two days before you leave, do some big water changes (make sure you get the substrate good and clean, don't forget to clean the filter). Feed normally during those two days... Then go to your great-grandma's 100th, have fun. And don't worry about the fish.

They'll do just fine for 4 days without food. I've left my Discus for 3 days without food and they were fine (tho they got put on a diet for the couple days before).

Anyone ever try one of the automatic feeders that you clip to the tank?

I guess they just work like a clock and dump flake into the tank each day? Cool idea, but I've never tried one as haven't taken more than 2 days off recently (and the fish can easily go 2 days without food).

I've got a few in use on various tanks... Some I like (the eheim) but the ones that don't have an airline running to them are junk - humidity causes the flakes to clump together then you either get either a big excess dumped in or none at all.

They aren't great in the sense of they do require almost daily attention - many simply to check up on them. Even with the eheim that is my favorite, I have to watch it, because even it will dump in way too much on some occasions...
