Awww, man.... It's killing me. I just bought a 55 with all the trimmings for 60 bucks. I had to put it in the bathroom (yep, that's right, opposite a big mirror) because I have absolutely not one inch more space in here. My bedroom is only big enough for my queen-size bed and a chest of drawers, the top of which is home to Odie the crowntail betta. One of my 29's butts up to one of the smaller bookcases in a corner on one side and a doorway on the other. The other is between the hearth and a partial wall. The 55 is behind the sofa, backing up to the computer desk and hutch. One of the 10s is on a sturdy end table, and the other one is below the second 29.
Too darn bad, too, my available 29 is on a custom-made stand done up by my hubby... two doors, extra tall, polyurethaned, light finish. He hasn't made the matching hood yet. I'd love to.... but I walk around this house and think, no way.... no way on earth.... lol
How cool it would be, though :)
(What am I gonna do about my MTS now???? =:O )

I'm moving the two goldies to the 55 and adding a couple more. The first one was earmarked for them and got made into an amazon tank.
I'd love to know which of your community would fit into a 29 well. I've been considering cichlids for this tank, as well as possibly rainbows. I hadn't made up my mind yet. If anyone has any input, I'd love to hear. :)
BTW, before I get a fish I research its care and keeping but I'm not sure how to research 'assorted' african cichlids. I'm thinking no way on a bichir eel in a 29, though. Does that sound right?
My tank has rocks and sand (could certainly switch out substrate), and I could add more caves. I have looked into the requirements of african cichlids in general, and I do feel I could handle some smaller, less agressive ones. And, of course, I have mft for when google fails me. :)

I've heard of people keeping trios of peacocks in 29-30gals. I'd say the Aulonocara stuartgranti (Flametail) would be fine in the 29gals. At 4"-5" thats about as big as its going to get...well, "SHOULD" get. I've never had the great opportunity of keeping this species (though its coming someday) but from what i've heard from talking to people and research is that they are a very mild mannered cichlid that is fairly undemanding. I'm sure some sand in the tank, cichlid pellets/flakes, and nice water changes would be fine....nothing to tricky there.

I would guess the common assorted would be Mbuna. Mostly like Red Zebras, yellow labs, etc. I wouldn't recommend keeping these in a 29gal...at least not for long.
