fresh water worms?

while doing a water change and gravel vacume today I notice some small white worms coming up out of the gravel into the vacume, any idea what they are? where they came from? and how to treat/get rid of them? also will they hurt my fish?

You might try googling info on "planaria" . If this is what you are seeing, they are harmless to fish and are eaten by fish as well. Is said that overfeeding is sometimes the cause and that regular gravel vaccuming and cutting back on feed will keep them in check or perhaps eliminate them.
