Hey there kitten!
So you want an spiny eel? They really are the coolest fish out there.
I have found that they also have alot of personality. If you are interested, here are some specifics I have learned by my experiences with them.
First of all, make sure you know which kind of eel you are getting. Fire eels, tire (sometimes tyre) track eels, and zig zag eels are very interesting looking, but unless you have a big tank, don't get them- they can grow to atleast 30 inches. So, I'd suggest getting a peacock eel (Macrognathus siamensis). They are pretty, and usually stay under 12 inches. I have successfully kept one of these in a 30 gal.
Yes- they can be a stubborn fish when it comes to feeding. When you buy them, ask the store clerk to feed them while you are there, so you know what they are used to. Eventually, you can "wean" them onto tubifex.
Make sure you have sufficient gravel for them to burrow in, as long as it isn't sharp. And if you have plants, they might get uprooted once in a while.
These guys are somewhat prone to disease, so try not to put them in any stressful situations. I use a weekly dose of Stress Coat, and it seems to help.
Lastly, Cover The Aquarium!!! These guys are masters of escape, and will do so if there is a hole wide enough for them to slip through. So, make sure your aquarium is well covered (even weighted down), better yet, get an eclipse hood- I've never had as escapee with one of those!
Whew! Sorry, I didn't mean to write that much!;D Hope it helped!
