The two yellow labs and two albino socolofi are in their new home a 55 gal hex. I am looking for tank mates for them in the next month or so. What would be compatable in such a small home? These fish are very small now...just babies. All ideas welcome. *BOUNCINGS

In mine I have 3 yellow labs, 1 blue socolofi, 1 red zebra, 1 female auratus and a bumblebee. I think any Mbuna would be ok or peacocks. I might have to take out the bumblebee eventually though, they get pretty big and aggressive.

Well I have those 7 in a 46, so you could get at least that. The more rock work and caves you have the better for territory. Usually the more of them you have the less aggression (if that makes sense) :D Can't wait to see pictures! The red zebras are especially pretty. I couldn't really pick a favorite though because they are all cool.

IMHO hex tanks make horible cichlid tanks (angels and discus excluded) because a majority need the footprint of the tank, not the height, and mbuna are certianly no exception to this.

I don't think that 7 could peacefully be ok for a year in your hex tank. However I'll step back and let those who have had experince give you a better idea.

what i would do with the tank is get a bunch of lava rock and stack it all the way up to the top. that way everyone has somewhere to hide. if you do that i dont see why you cant add more fish. by saying this im assuming your tank is about 27x24x28. what you need to do is when you add another fish is watch the tank for agression. if you not seeing someone getting picked on too much then try adding another one. just liike lini said, especially with mbuna, the more you have the more you spread out the agression. but it also depends on your filtration as to how many you can pack in there.

**smacks forehead* Orions right, about the hex shape. I wasn't thinking long term. You may be able to build a center column of rock with lots of hidey holes, but I'm not really sure if they would use the ones higher up (?) You could also stick to a couple of the more peaceful cichlids like yellow labs instead of getting a variety. Let us know how it goes!!

I would see what some other people think too. :)
