I have one small fry. She/he will be a month old on 10/3/09. The fry is approximately a little over 1/4" in length. I am feeding the fry Hikari First Bites food. How do I know when to change the food? I have never had a fry before, but definitely want him to grow. Thanks.

Once mine get where they look big enough, I try crushed flakes to see if they eat it. Then I feed both for awhile, alternating flake with First Bites. Even my 8 week old mollies still like their First Bites. Plus, its designed for babies. I think it helps them grow just like puppy food. Is she alone in a tank? Must be hard not to over feed one baby. I would be nuts about water changes. Partial changes every other day or so depending on her tank. If she in a breeder, her extra will just fall through and the other fish will get it. She's pretty small to be a month old. What is she? Are you feeding her frequently? I feed my fry 5 or 6 times a day. You can practically feed fry every hour or two as long as you keep the quantitiy correct and the water clean. My 2 month old mollies are over 3/4 in long. I have 3 wk old guppies at nearly 1/2 in.

Honestly, I don't know. Based on the information provided to the guy in Petsmart, the fry is a Red Glass Barb. How big should my fry be by now? I was told to feed her once a day. She/he is the only fry in a two gal bowl. She/he loves her bowl. I was hoping she/he would be big enough by Winter to be put back in the tank with the other fish. I don't want her bowl to get too cold. All information is welcome. Thanks.

That is the reason why your fish is so small. You are not feeding it nearly enough. Feeding 5 to 7 times each day is recommended. My mollies were at least a good 3/4 of an long when they were a month old. If you feed your fish 5 to 7 times a day and give him/her frequent water changes, she will be large enough to be in the tank with the other fish by winter. Frequent water changes help the fish to grow a lot!

Ah yes, another example of a clueless pet store employees giving out bad advice. Now you will know better than to rely on them. Your little fry has made it this far. He/she will be fine. Just get those feedings up and remember that you must keep on top of the water quality in her bowl. She'll grow like mad:)

5 to 7 is what I've always been told. And my fry tank is small, so I change a gallon of water every other day at least. It only takes about 2 minutes to do. Mine where big enough to place back in the tank around 3 weeks, but I'm very overprotective of them and stuck them in the large tank at about a month and a half. By then, they were about an inch long.
