Hi All,

So, I bought this lovely peice of "mango root" for my tank a few weeks ago. It looks great, it is really twisted is just the right size for my tank.

However, there is a problem. Something keeps growing on it! At first I thought it was slime algae or somthing, but I have done some digging and I reckon it is a fungus. It is snow white and kinda looks like cotton wool, it also stinks of rotton eggs when it is out of the water! *SICK*

This is a pic of it. (Note, not taken by me, got it off the net).

The peice of wood was too big for me to boil. I did give it a good scrub and pour boiling water on it. Aside from that I have heard it is bad to boil the wood as it can cause it to break down in the water.

I do weekly water changes and have been taking the wood out and blasting it with hot water ion the shower. This strips it off, but this thing is unstopable! By that evening there are signs that it is growing again!

I have not been overfeeding and I do gravel vacs every week. The tank seems fine, fish too. They are feeding and active and lookiung healthy. They even pick at the fungus! The water looks great too; a little leaching by the wood, but I dont mind that.

Water is:
NO3-0
NO2-0
pH-6.2
KH-180
GH-120

Anyone any ideas on how to get rid of it? I dont really think it is harmful, its just a pain in the arse!

I have no idea what the white stuff is, but do you have a big enough bucket you could soak it in bleach for a bit? Remember, bleach is chlorine so if you soak it afterword in treated it water it should be fine for your tank.

It's harmless and usually only lasts a few weeks. If its excessive and bothers you, you can use your gravel vac to suck it off or remove/rinse it. A lot of fish will eat it.
