I have a male GBR and I am just curious as to how long does it usually take for the fish to be comfortable enough to start to show its bright vivid colors?

mine did after its first night in the tank, all depends on how comfortable it feels. if after a day your GBR is still pale i may worry. They tend to be harder to aclimate and keep at first IMO. Nice lookin one too, u got a male

Coloration will also depend on the strain of your fish.
Real German Blue Rams are vibrantly colored with rich orange and red hues. German rams were line-bred in Europe for better colors which is what makes them so beautiful. Now a days the German line-bred rams are not nearly as impressive as the lines they came from. Careless breeders have bred whatever they get their hands on regardless of proper coloration, size or form for the German strain and keep the "German Blue Ram" name on them. So while the name of "German Blue Ram" is supposed to promise a robust ram with vibrant and rich coloration, today it often does not.
Wild-type or regular blue rams have a more half-yellow/half-blue patten/color on them.

Some rams are just not that colorful, probably due to breeding conditions like straitjacket said. However, I have noticed that they mostly display the really vivid colors only when competing with another male, or courting a female.

They are great looking fish, would you mind me stealing some of your stocking ideas when I pick up my 50 gal next week...

I love the Dwarf Gouramis and the GBR's, but I was hoping to put a Bala shark I have inherited in with them, would they be good tank mates? bit worried the shark will get to big for them...
