Hi everyone. Currently, I have a 20 gallon aquarium and a 10 gallon one. I have goldfish and danios in my 20 and some swordtails, guppies, and neons in my 10. I want to change my 10 gallon one to a 20 so I can have two 20. What would be the easiest way of doing this? I was thinking of getting a divider for my 20 just so I can put my 10 gallon fish in there. I thought that they could live in there for a week or however long they should need to be in there. What do you guys think? Thanks.

No. Sorry, I meant I want to get rid of my 10 so I can get another 20. I didnt know how I should go about moving my fish so that I could get a larger tank and then move them back.

Welcome to the forum! First off you should probably read this discussion on goldfish - I think you will find they take a lot more room then a 20g tank so before you plunge in, do a little research. We kind of need to know the number of fish and kind that you now have and your plan. Also do you understand what cycling is and water parameters?

Yes I understand all of that. And right now I have 3 goldfish and 3 danios in my 20 gallon. I just wanted to move my swordtails into a little part of the 20gallon just for a little while just so I could get my new tank set up.

You can do that. I hope that your planning to sell the 10g. It could help with the money for a 20g. Do you have a regular 20g or a 20g long?? It might be useful if you had 1 regular 20g and a 20gL.

Um, cycle the new tank with media from the old tanks, but keep the 10 running while you do it. too many moves can put undue stress on your fish. Also, m moving the fish all together can also cause a lot of stress and send your established 20 into a mini cycle due to the sudden increase in fish... If you need to move your 10 out of the way, drain it half-way, put the fish into a bag or something, then drain the rest and carefully move the 10 to an out-of-the-way spot so you can set up the new tank.
Just a thought.

When you finish setting up the 20G I would keep the 10G running to use as a quarantine tank (You put new fish from the LFS in it to make sure no disease enters the "show tanks" or to isolate sick fish). Believe me, I don't have a QT, and it's pretty rough.
