Getting rid of Ammonia

I did a 25-30% water change and tested the level and it was the same. The strip thingy said it was safe but I don't think it was at 0. How soon after a water change do you see the difference? Anything else I could be doing?

1. How big is your tank?
2. How long as it been running?
3. 1 & 2 are important factors!

are you using test strips? they arent as reliable for testing water, the liquid test kits are a better choice and they will give you a better reading

Ok I am using test strips but will switch to the liquid, I thought the strips would be better

Tank is 55 gallons and has been running 3 weeks, have been doing regular water changes

Make sure your tap water doesn't contain ammonia as well.

Also if you have fish in the tank or not...
