I'm thinking about putting a dozen WCM in my 30 tank. I'm keeping them and my lfs is selling them for 12 for $2.49. They are used as feeders, but a lot of people come in to buy them as pets. They are healthy and disease free. I was also thinking about breeding them. I think they might be compatible with my Goldfish, but I don't want my Goldfish eating the WCM fry. I guess that's why I have a spare breeding tank, huh?? lol!! Does anyone have any experience with Whit Cloud Mountain Minnows?? Any advice would be lovely!!

Hello; No useful advice about keeping WCM minnows. I have kept them and feel they are among the most beautiful freshwater fish.

I seem to recall that they do better in cooler water. My biggest problem now is keeping a tank cool in the hot part of the summer. I do not air condition the house except on hot muggy nights and the tank temps can become warm. A tray of ice cubes in the water helps. I use to keep most of my tanks in a basement in a former house and the temps would stay down. I have a basement in the current place, but want my tanks up where I can see them more of the time. I was also married back then and going to the basement had additional appeal.

They do not get big, so are unlikely to outgrow a 30 gallon. I would be tempted to have 24 in a 30 gallon, but 12 to start out with is a good plan and should be a visual treat.

That would be nice! I actually keep mine in my heated 10 gallon betta tank (no, they do not get eaten!) , and they are perfect! All 7 of them. They can handle cooler temps just fine. They are very nice little fish- I love the red and silver on mine. :)

Thanks. I like how the fry look. They have nice icy blue eyes that are lighter than Neon Tetras'. I can't wait to get them!! I would go and look at them at my lfs down the street, but I would have to walk through a downpour and have flashes of lightning and rumbles of thunder everywhere. lol. When I was getting lunch (in my dad's car) the thunder shook the whole car. Wicked!!

WCM are sort of related to danios and as such are basically cold water fish like your goldfish. I'm not really sure as to the activity level of WCM, but if they're anything like danios your goldfish won't catch them easily. Since they're coldwater fish, for the most part, they can tolerate warmer temperatures, but lower temps will increase their lifespan.

i have a few of them at the moment. very hardy fish. at first, when it was just them in the tank, i kept them in there without a heater. after getting a few tropical fish i put in a heater and they seem to be doing just as well. you cant really go wrong with them. they seem to be able to take anything i throw at them

Thanks!! Also, can Black Moors get along with Ryukins?? I heard a yes and a no from websites. I'm starting to think about getting 1-2 Black Moor(s) and 1-2 Ryukin(s).

Ok, then 1 of each. I think I might end up upgrading (after the Goldies grow up) to a 50 gallon. I could ue the 30 gallon for something else, a WCM tank, another Goldfish tnak, or a tropical tank. But I think I might not buy a heater for that tank.

Actually, I started up my first 10 gallon in Jauary, so more like 4 months. But still, I'm a good haggler and I know how to get my deals. lol. I'm thinking about getting some Ghost Shrimp and I want to breed them. I have Java Moss, but I think that my fry will eat the eggs. Can I put all my fish in my Fry Tank, take some Java Moss and put it in the other tank, put the ghost Shrimp in that tank and raise them in there?? My lfs has almost all female GS though. Almost all of them are carrying eggs. But I'm thinking about getting them this weekend, or next.

That's an excellent ability to have!

Ghost shrimp are a bit complicated - I believe they need brackish water to reproduce? Or something like that... May take some research.

Cherry shrimp however are beautiful and breed like livebearers :)

Gross! I actually researched a bit after I said that and it's not true  I got them mixed up with nerites!

I guess they just have a larval stage which is a bit difficult to care for. I'm sure if anybody can figure it out it's you, though! (or you could haggle for some red cherry shrimp *BOUNCINGS)

me: *Walks into lfs* Hi there!! I'll give you this batch of healthy Tiger Platy fry that I breed for some Red Cherry Shrimp.
lfs: Well, how about some Ghost Shrimp instead?
me: Did you run out of RCS??
lfs: ......yes....?
me: RAIN CHECK!!!

If I get a heater for my 30 to keep it around 70F, can I keep a Bristlenose Pleco in there with my Goldfish?? I heard of people successfully pulling that off at that temperature. Or would a Pleco and Goldfish bio-load do more harm then good?? I will probably only be able to clean the tank 2 times every other week. Is that ok though?? I do that with my 10 gallons. I clean the tanks on Friday and then on the following Thursday, then when Friday rolls around again I clean them again. I did a water test before I cleaned the tanks to see what the levels were. These were the results.
Fry Tank (most fish in tank)- Ammonia-0, Nitrites-0, Nitrates-.25ppm
Adult Tank (least fish)- Ammonia-0, Nitrites-0, Nitrates-.09
