I bought several ghost shrimp a few days ago and after I got home I noticed that one of them has several long loops of bright white stuff inside of him. It seems to be one long worm-like strand as it loops along his tail section and two or three times around his "torso". Is this internal worms or parasites? I have separated him and put him in the QT. I guess it is a good thing I got that honey gourami outta there a while back, huh?... But I will not beat a dead horse, so back to the ghost shrimp. I'd really like to cure him of his apparent malady, but he only cost 26 cents at Wal-Mart (no Wal-Mart hating comments please), so I don;t think it is worth it to spent a lot of money curing a 26 cent shrimp. However, I do want to know how to cure him as I have over $50 worth of shrimp in my 20 gallon tank between the dozen or so Amanos and the 2 Bamboo Shrimp I just acquired recently.

I have only dealt with one outbreak of ich almost 2 years ago and curing the ich wiped out my plants, so I am a definite noobie when it comes to diseases. I'll post a pic of the shrimp with his bright white internal loops in a few minutes.

What could it be?
What is the standard cure?
Does the standard cure work on shrimp?
Could it spread to my other shrimp? fish?

I've never read anything that has any good info on shrimp/crustacean diseases. I would say that you should leave him in the Q tank for a while and see what happens, or euthanize him/her. A pic might help.

By the way, I hear Pepso food is lethal to shrimp, so that route probably isn't an option. Perhaps feeding some garlic???? *shrugs*

Well, the shost shrimp went into QT which is full of algae and various semi-unidentifiable rotifers. i fed him some medicated flake food from who knows when. Main ingredient is tetracycline hydrochloride, and 2 days later worms are gone and he looks normal.

I cannot believe i medicated a 23 cent shrimp. I never would have spent money on meds for a 23cent ghost shrimp, so it is a good thing I got a free can of medicated flakes a while back when I bought a used tank.

I will keep him in the QT for another week or so and then maybe I'll put him back in the shrimp tank. Now I just need to keep an eye on the 2nd Bamboo shrimp which is in the QT as well...

The madication of the poor ghost schrimp is a very humane action. It supports our opinion of you as being good and kind person especially after your gourami The Killer execution that was done to save many fish-souls and avenge innocently mudered. *twirlysmi
