I got 4 new Ghost Shrimp yesterday for my 30 gallon community tank. They're doing fine, but i have no idea what to feed them. they've been eating leftover flakes that float to the bottom, but im interested in purchasing some sinking pellets. Does anyone reccommend any specific brands? What about live food? Thanks.

MissFish_e...

Ghost shrimp will eat practically ANYTHING that they can get ahold of. I have some that were originally intended as fish food that managed to survive against all odds. Now they're getting downright big...and aggressive! I've watched them grab Hikari algae wafers right out from under my Yo-Yo loaches and drag them away to feast at their leisure. They also eat bloodworms, daphnia, and shrimp pellets. Every once in a while they even try to nab one of my fish!

GAHHH! one of the 4 shrimp i've been talking about just ate one of my red wag platy fry that i couldn't catch! i saw the ghost shrimp on a plant with something in its stomach. lo and behold... it was still moving, and most likely the fry i couldn't find. now im mad at myself for not catching it this morning. what a terrible mother. well, i guess it happens in the wild. just thought i'd let you know...

if it was a fry, i hope it was already dead :-/ i have noticed that all of the shrimp have this brown bulge near the front of their bodies. maybe it's their heart or stomach...?

yeah i think that's the stomach.

hey i just cleaned out a tank in which i had one female ghost shrimp and some snail babies...and i found half a dozen TINY baby ghost shrimp! first ones i ever had that survived past the little larval stage. they're so tiny...and kinda cute, but maybe that's just me.

ghost shrimp will clean up the waste left from other fish at the bottom of the aquarium, but they'd most likely get eaten by your cichlids before getting a chance to do so. and no they won't stir up the gravel.

realy. how big do they get. my cichlid's are still very small except the angels they look big enough to eat a small neon (lucky all my neons and glowlights are big).

i just need some sort of fish that will stir up the bottom so the current can pick up the fish waste and move it towards the intake.
the waste is building up around the bottom of objects in my tank logs, plants.

i have the bristlnoses and wiptails but they are always on the glass and i hardly ever see them on the bottom.

cheers aron.

ghost shrimp dont really stir up the bottom. actually, they look pretty frail and incapable of moving anythng heavy around. maybe instead of finding a fish that stirs up the bottom, you could vacuum the gravel? it might be hard for the waste, etc to find its way into the intake part of your filter (unless of course the filter sucks REALLLLY hard).

vacumeing is such a pain. ill have to do it 1 a week to keep the gravel clean. and everytime i do it my water goes murky (like a milky colour with lots of minute particles)

i clean the filter in tank water i dont even rinse it with normal tapwater, and it still goes murky. clear in 2 -3 days but then i got 3-4 days the i clean it again and it starts all over. the tank in our house is part of the ouse(a show piece) and dosent look good when we have visitors over.

cheers aron.

i would think most cichlids would make a quick lunch of ghost shrimp. my father's angels eat them as a treat...and they're not even very large angels. can't imagine what a "truly" aggressive cichlid might do. eek. off with the eyes (if they're small)! down the hatch (if they're big)!

i bought some shrimp pellets for my ghosts. problem is they sink too fast. next time i feed them i'll soak 'em for awhile so they soften b4 they sink to the bottom. (i noticed that when they sink to fast none of the shrimp/fish can eat them.) is there any way to keep the fish away from the pellets while the shrimp are trying to eat? thanks
