From what Pure has told me Gibby's are territorial. They need to have space enough and then a smaller Pleco can be added to the tank. I just introduced my Tiger Pleco and they are still figuring each other out, territories and all. But I havent had any fights. Here's the pm reply from him:
"As long as you have room...sure. The thing is, they are not aggresive, but more territorial, and in most tanks a plec the size of a gibby there isn't enough room for another large one. How ever they normally do ok with smaller plecs.
Example: http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y12...clownplec2.jpg My royal and clown hang out together all the time. But I dare not put another large royal in there. That I'm affraid would end very badly.
The key to keeping multiple plecs is A. have enough room. B. Make sure you have more than enough caves for everyone. And I do stress MORE than enough."

my 55 does have plenty of room IMO for 2 of them, and does provide a lot of caves. i just really want a golden nugget but dont want to spend 40 on a fish and lose em to a bully gibby. i just need something to help him keep the tank clean...

Your 55 may have enough room to support the bio-load of another plec. But it doesn't have enough room to support territory of 2 large plecs and in fact the Gibby will indeed out grow your 55. You may be fine with a gold nug in the beginning. But (like I explained to you before) there are at least 3 species of gold nugget (I've seen an undescribed 4th) all but one get huge. Don't buy one unless you can tell them apart.

If you get the smaller one you should be fine.

Even though it doesn't say it. I've seen these well over 12 inches in length.

Now you may be saying to yourself "what can a pleco actually do" you may even be doubting their abilities in a fight. Trust me when I say a pissed off pleco of any kind of substantial size can inflict heavy damage. Especially to another large bodied pleco confined in a tank where they can not get away from each other.

happens when you get stuck by one of THESE things!!
You bleed!

LOL, Actually I have never heard of any one who's fish actually used these against them. I don't normally stick my hands in the tank and try to pet this fish, or any other. But when I do need to pull her from the tank, she just kinda freezes. I push her to the bottom slip a thumb under her and pull her out.

The one in the pic is a male, and they normally loose the very long ones like that just to regrow them. Think of it like a deers antlers.
