Hi guys. We are still relatively new fish people, and we have had our two golden mystery snails Wednesday. One of them keeps floating up the surface and bobbing around. How can I tell if its starving or hungry for algae and we don't have enough? Is this floating normal? I'm freaked out. He looks sad while the other one has not left his spot on the glass in 48 hours.

Anything I should look for as far as odd behavior that might show signs he's dying?

Also, when we put him back to the bottom of the tank (after discovery of his floating) this long tentacle thing keeps reaching out...like a penis. I'm going to go find information about these poor things.

Check back later.

:( Sad Peach.

I don't think we have food or vegetation ample for these guys. The pet store people really are no help to us. LOL.

The tenticle you see is one of its eyes. Look at this.

Go to anatomy/reproduction, you can see a picture of a snail with exposed penis-sheath, it is entirely possible. It is also common for them to be relatively inactive at times, floating is ok. If the snail smells bad or does not come out of it's shell at all it may be dead. Watch to see if the fish are nipping it, they will nip at eyestalks, eyes mostly but can nip at any exposed part, that will obviously cause the snail to hide.

Go buy some algae wafers and cut up and freeze a zucchini. Once every day or three take out a slice of zucchini, nuke it in a cup of water for 1 minute. Let it cool, then shove an algae wafer in it and drop it in the tank. You should see them on the algae wafer in no time.

Ok, I'll have to try this then. We got those algae wafers, and the fish ate it all. now the fish look bloated and ready to pop from over eating. GEEZ!

What does freezing the zucchini do?

It keeps it fresh longer for one, and it makes it dissolve more slowly I think. idk, I know that if you cut the zucchini into 1" slices and stick them in the freezer they last longer. A few months I believe.

by any chance do you have an Air stone? My Yellow Mystery Snails slide onto my air stones. Then quickly float up into the air when there shells are full of air. they bounce n bob around n come back down then do it all over again. they
have done this for a year and a half now. i was worried at first now i just think they are bored lol. As for the food i
bought algae tabs and placed 1 or two in my tank they go crazy for them.

Yes, I do have air stones-and that does happen here also. I bought algae tablets, and did what the pet store clerk told me-two dropped in at night every other day or few days.
The fish ate all the algae in less than an hour. They bloated up. So I stopped doing it when it happened a second time.
One snail I'm pretty sure died. The fish were picking at it and pulling it out of the shell. He hadn't moved in three days.

The ghost shrimp, not so sure. One died, can't find the others. It's more frustrating than anything with this high ph water.
