Howdy,
I'll preface with I'm definitely committed to keeping the fish alive and healthy.
I'm a non-keeper that recently acquired a 40-gallon tall tank for $3.00 and am looking to get 2-3 fancy goldfish and a couple of hillstream loaches. I know goldfish can get pretty obnoxious with the waste/ammonia/nitrates so I was planning on a doing a planted tank. However, co2 was too expensive so I thought about doing a 10-20 gallon sump with algae scrubber. This would grow my water supply to deconcentrate the waste from the fish, supply oxygen with the scrubber, and keep all of the works out of my tank all the while keeping cost relatively low. However, to me it looks right on paper but that's easy to say as a non-owner.
My inquiry is basically: will this keep the fish alive and healthy whilst remaining sustainable?
